JERUSALEM / NEW HAVEN — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has announced the death of Sergeant Moshe Yitzchak HaCohen Katz, a 22-year-old “lone soldier” from New Haven, Connecticut, who was killed during combat operations in southern Lebanon. The military confirmed on Sunday, March 29, 2026, that Katz, a member of the 890th Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade, fell during a Hezbollah rocket attack on Friday night.
The incident also left three other soldiers moderately wounded. They have been evacuated to hospitals in Israel for treatment.
A “Lone Soldier” with a “Zest for Life”
Moshe Yitzchak, a member of the Chabad Hasidic movement, had lived in Connecticut before enlisting in the IDF as a lone soldier—those serving without immediate family residing in Israel.
- Family Tribute: His father, Mendy Katz, shared the news in a heartbreaking Facebook post, describing his oldest son as a young man with a “zest for life and jokes.”
- “My Heart is Shattered”: “With unspeakable tragedy, I regret to inform you that my 22-year-old son Moshe Yitzchak… fell in battle in Lebanon,” the post read. “My heart is shattered and the wound is real.”
- Burial Plans: A funeral service is scheduled to take place in Israel on Monday, March 30.
Casualties in the North (March 27–29)
The death of Sgt. Katz brings the total number of people killed by Hezbollah fire since the start of the northern campaign on March 2 to eight, including five soldiers and three civilians.
- Friday/Saturday Rocket Attack: Sgt. Katz was killed in a specific rocket barrage targeting paratroopers operating in southern Lebanon.
- Separate Heavy Losses: In a separate incident on Saturday, nearly 20 soldiers were injured, including seven moderately, following a heavy rocket attack. Among the wounded was a lieutenant colonel from the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit.
- Anti-Tank Strikes: Earlier on Friday, two officers were wounded—one seriously—after an anti-tank missile struck their position during an engagement with gunmen.

What’s Next?
The death of a U.S. citizen serving in the IDF often intensifies diplomatic focus on the conflict. While President Trump has maintained a “non-intervention” stance regarding Lebanon, the increasing toll on American-Israeli lone soldiers may increase domestic pressure in the U.S. as the April 6 deadline for a regional settlement approaches.
